What we check when a starter will not turn
Starter repairs begin with the basics and move outward from there. We check battery condition, cranking voltage, terminal security, earth points, starter relay operation and the signal reaching the solenoid. If the battery is weak or the charging system is off, the starter can look guilty when the real fault sits elsewhere.
Our workshop handles vehicles with intermittent no-crank complaints, heat related failures and low voltage issues that show up after standing overnight. We also look for worn brushes, stuck solenoids, damaged cables, loose lugs and poor earth return on body or engine points. On many vehicles the trouble is not the motor itself but the circuit feeding it.
- OBD fault code reading where the vehicle supports it
- Battery and charging tests before removal
- Cranking voltage drop checks on positive and earth lines
- Starter relay, fuse and control signal testing
- Bench testing where the unit needs to be removed
Starter faults we repair in the workshop
Some starters need internal work, others need wiring repair or replacement parts on the circuit. We repair starter motors, solenoids and associated cabling where the casing, drive gear or internal contacts are still serviceable. If the problem sits in the starter circuit rather than the motor, we trace it through the ignition feed, relay, fuse box and earth side until the break is found.
We also deal with heat soaked starters on delivery vans and fleet vehicles that work in stop start traffic around Cape Town and the Northern Suburbs. A unit can pass a quick bench check and still fail under load, so we test under conditions that mirror the complaint. That saves parts from being swapped without a reason.
- Starter motor strip and inspection
- Solenoid testing and contact repair
- Starter circuit tracing and loom repair
- Earth fault correction and cable replacement
- Starter relay and fuse box checks
How the diagnosis is carried out
We start with the symptom and work through the vehicle in a set order. The technician checks the battery first, then reads available fault data, then measures voltage during cranking and compares feed, control and ground readings. That tells us whether the issue is in the starter itself, the wiring, the relay path, or a deeper electronic fault on the vehicle side.
When a vehicle has CAN bus related starting issues, the starter may be fine but the control module is not allowing the request through. In those cases we check communication basics, security related signals where relevant, and the wiring links between modules. The aim is to separate a mechanical starter failure from an electrical command fault, because the fix is not the same.
- Live data review where the system allows it
- Voltage drop testing under cranking load
- Control side and high current side separation
- CAN bus basic checks for command faults
- Final verification after repair
Mobile call-outs for fleet vehicles and private owners
Some starter problems can be diagnosed on site, especially when the vehicle is stuck at a depot, home or work yard in Milnerton, Bellville, Somerset West or Paarl. Mobile call-outs are useful for batteries, relay checks, simple wiring faults and starter circuit testing. If the starter needs bench work or removal, we will arrange that at the workshop in Montague Gardens.
Fleet operators often need a clear split between what can be fixed on site and what must be brought into the workshop. We keep the process practical: inspect, test, identify the fault path and decide on the least disruptive repair route. Private owners get the same method, just on a smaller scale.
- Cape Town, Bellville and Milnerton call-outs
- Somerset West, Paarl and Brackenfell call-outs
- Mobile testing for no-crank faults
- Workshop transfer when strip-down is needed
- Starter circuit fault tracing on site where possible
Pricing approach and parts decisions
Starter repair pricing depends on the fault path, the vehicle layout and whether the issue sits in the motor, solenoid, wiring or control side. A simple relay or cable repair is not priced like a full starter strip and rebuild. We quote on the work the test results support.
For some vehicles, replacing the complete starter assembly makes better sense than rebuilding a worn unit with heat damage, broken terminals or heavy bearing wear. On others, a targeted repair gives a better result and keeps the vehicle moving without unnecessary parts changes. We explain the options in plain terms and list the parts and labour separately where needed.
- Fault based pricing, not blanket pricing
- Labour depends on access and removal effort
- Parts vary by vehicle design and starter type
- Repair or replacement advised after testing
- No work starts without a clear fault path
Aftercare after the starter is fixed
Once the starter repair is complete, we recheck the battery, charging output and cranking performance so the vehicle leaves with the full system working as it should. If the fault was caused by a weak earth, loose terminal or parasitic drain, we make sure the related point is corrected too. That helps stop the same complaint from returning because the real cause was left behind.
We can also point out signs to watch for, such as slower cranking after standing, repeated clicks, burning smells near the starter lead or lights dimming more than normal during crank. Those signs matter on both diesel and petrol vehicles, especially where the vehicle works hard in traffic or carries extra electrical accessories.
- Post-repair battery and alternator check
- Cranking performance verification
- Earth and terminal recheck
- Related drain or wiring fault review
- Workshop record kept for fleet follow-up
